This essay aims to elucidate the role of "Watashi"-"I" in "Tanko-Chitai-Byoin" - "A Hospital in the Coal Mining Region", written by Ibuse Masuji. In the story three people plan to go to court because ...of a girl who dies after being raped. "Watashi" meets these three people and hears each of their statements, which turn out to be contradictory. The role of "Watashi" is important in this story, which follows the style in which these three people talk to "Watashi". This essay endeavours to scrutinize the interpretation which "Watashi" makes in recording their statements. Examination of this point reveals a number of difficulties in the story.続きを見る
