Abstract |
The research and studies so far made on Mary as depicted in Akutagawa's "Saihonohito" (The Westerner) have explored, in general, the relationship between the Holy Spirit and Mary. The aim of my study ...is to explain Akutagawa's descriptions of and expressions concerning Mary through commentaries on the Bible. Mary in the Bible is a woman devoted and faithful to God, and a mother who loves her son as well. But Mary in Akutagawa's understanding is a symbol of commonness. His Mary is symbolic of his view of woman and life itself He uses an expression 'beautiful Mary' about her, which is not found in the Bible. It shows a hint of Akutagawa's cynical attitude toward immoral women, which has a correlation in his expression of a 'hellish life'.show more
