Abstract |
In this paper I investigate the social background of Yokomitsu's <Monsho>. He wrote that his task was to realize the intellectuals' ideal of making decisions freely. I examine the meaning of his state...ment by studying the character's views on freedom and justice in <Monsho>. Around 1933, "New liberalism" was a matter of debate among Japanese intellectuals. Liberalism was not linked with the notion of personal possession and capitalism. <Monsho> also takes part in this discussion. Like Miki Kiyoshi, intellectuals then were being influenced by Immanuel Kant's thought. The freedom dealt with in <Monsho> means Kantian freedom as intellectual activity.show more
