Abstract	Yoshimoto Takaaki and Michel Foucault met in Tokyo in 1978. The topic of their discussion was "The ways and methods of understanding the world", in other words, whether it is possible or not to unders...tand the world in its totality. This meeting was in fact an epochmaking event as a meeting between a contemporary Japanese philosopher and his contemporary western counterpart. Besides, this event also provided a stimulus to the development of both thinkers. This paper, while emphasizing Yoshimoto's view, tries to examine the change/transition in his thinking before and after the meeting.show more
