Abstract Naming has mainly two social functions. Naming distinguishes an individual from others, and it gives him a certain familial sense. Characters in the novels by Sagisawa Megumu strive to free themselves... from the institution by writing their names in katakana. These names take the place of their full names and reflect the nature of their new peer groups. But this new loose connection is unstable. So characters only remove the familial aspect from their new peer groups while forming a false-familial camaraderie.show more
