Abstract A survey of the stand composition and the volume of the Sawara Experimental Forest of Kyushu University was carried out in December 1962, and the results were compared with those of the past two surve...ys as follows. 1) As the trees planted in the 1930's were reaching 6 cm in D.B.H., the increase of number of trees in the past few years is remarkable. 2) With respect to the distribution of the number of trees by D.B.H., the trees of 6 cm D.B.H. were dominant in number, and the forest showed the characteristics of the two-storied forest, different from the results of the past two surveys. As regards the trees of 8 cm D.B.H. and larger, the number of trees of less than 30 cm diameter decreases with age, but the number of trees of more than 30 cm diameter increases with age. The trend of the stand composition differed by location, and it was observed that the forest included within itself stands of the characteristics of the two-storied forest, the even-aged forest, and the old-aged forest. 3) The distribution of volume by D.B.H moved to the right with the years of surveys. 4) The rate of volume growth was 2.4%, and was twice as large as that at the 1957 survey. This seems to be due to the fact that there are many afforested trees growing to 6 cm D.B.H. and the larger trees also are growing fairly well.show more
