Abstract 1.
This paper deals with the study of influences of difference of planting densities and patterns on the growth of two model stands. Both the model stands were established in March 1958. Sugi seedlings were planted in Model Stand I, and Sugi plantlets grown from cuttings were planted in Stand II. Sugi plants of Stand I were dug up and the fresh weights were measured in July 1960. In Stand II, only the top lengths were measured in November 1960. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. On Model Stand I 1) Regarding the fresh weight of total top per unit area, there was no difference between the individual planting and the planting in clumps, except the high density planting in clumps. 2) In the case of planting in clumps, when the planting densities were high and equal, most of the plots which had larger numbers per clump showed lower fresh weight of total top. 3) When clump distances were equal, fresh weights of total top per clump tended to be equal. 4) Top lengths were not affected by difference of densities or patterns. 5) With higher densities also, the frequency of top lengths showed a normal distribution. 2. On Model Stand II 1) Top length growths had not yet been affected by densities and patterns. 2) The frequency distribution of top lengths was normal.
