Abstract The present study attempted to understand and provide a theoretical model for the everyday phenomenon of people's gathering in the urban central district. Literature review in the field of environment...al psychology and urban design was conducted with the following purposes: 1)to discuss the relationship bettween people's gathering in the central business district and the nature of attractiveness of urban environments, 2) to explore the process of psychological changes during approaching to the urban center, and 3) to explore the nature of environment experience involved in the forces which attract people toward the urban central district in the everyday life context. By focusing on the human psychological processes with the continuity of environment experiences and Lewin's theory of life space and field dynamics as basic principle the following three levels of categories in the perception and cognitive process in the people's life space were induced. They were 1)the cognitive image level, 2) the environmental affordance level, and 3) direct contact with five senses. Finally, an integrated model of human environmental experience in which cognitive image, perceptual affordance and engagement in behavior settings were kept in the continuity of the person's life space was proposed with an illustration of its application to the movie script of "Summer Time".show more
