Abstract This study examined the role of sports in generating energetic and tense arousal as evident in the Japanese UWIST mood adjective checklist (JUMACL) by considering the specific example of doubles table... tennis. Thirty-six female first graders in a technical college played the game of doubles table tennis, and the JUMACL and salivary amylase activity were analyzed before and after the game. Results show that energetic arousal significantly increased after a game of doubles table tennis, regardless of an individual's skill level, difference between the partners' skill levels, and outcome of the game. In contrast, after a game, tense arousal increased among players with low skill levels of lower outcome of the doubles. The salivary amylase activity did not demonstrate any significant difference. These results suggest that while playing doubles table tennis negatively affects a player, making him/her experience subjective tension depending on his/her skill level and the outcome of the game, it also has a positive effect in that it increases the energetic arousal of the player, regardless of the factors mentioned above.show more
