Abstract This paper identifies the spatial composition of the Region suggested by planner Patrick Geddes in the early 20th century in UK. Geddes's famous concept 'valley-section' provides a spatial and concept...ual framework which is ecologically, economically and socially optimized and thus can be applied to attempts stimulating alternative modes of urban-rural partnerships. Drawing upon the image developed by Geddes, the paper considers both clustered watersheds which share same geo-spatial characteristic and clustered core municipalities which indicate significant regional development potential as structuring elements of a region. The paper utilizes available open source geo-spatial data and unfolds the spatial composition of the region by overlaying those two elements. Finally it divided Kyushu Island, the case study site of the paper, into 16 regions and examined these spatial characteristics in detail.show more
