Abstract This paper is a review of past research trends concerning "career education," in reference to foreign students in Japan, and aims to clarify what implications these might have on any future research. ...In order to review the research on foreign students' career education, this paper will describe the position of foreign students in Japan. There will then be a review of trends in research on foreign students' career education and a description of the background of employability theory, as well as an overview of the research on employability. The findings in this study are as follows: (1) Regardless of the cultivation of "highly skilled" foreign students, employability theory in Japan does not take into consideration human resource. (2) Research into foreign students' career education overlooks the fact that companies are susceptible to change at the hands of globalization, and instead focuses on the students attempts to fit into a Japanese company.(3) This research is significant as it specifically focuses on the challenges of early career development for foreign employees in the work place. In future research, it would be valuable for employability theory to discuss "highly-skilled" foreign students, and the challenges they face during the early stages of their career in the work place.show more
