Abstract Recent studies revealed that an atmospheric boundary layer responds significantly to spatial variations of sea surface temperature (SST).Here we investigate responses of an air-sea coupled boundary la...yer to diurnal variations in solar radiation, by conducting one dimensional numerical experiments and analyzing moored-buoy data and satellite data. Significant responses of the coupled boundary layer (SST and sea surface wind (SSW)) are identified in both observed buoy data and numerical experiments. Satellite data show significant dependence of diurnal amplitude of SSW variations on latitude and season. Numerical experiments suggest that this dependence is related to latitudinal difference in mean wind speed and mean heat flux between atmosphere and ocean.show more
