Abstract |
Recent collections from six localities near McCarthy, in the upper Chitina Valley, Alaska, contain seventeen species of ammonites that are described and illustrated in this paper. Four new species are... established. The ammonites include interesting examples of Marshallitinae, one of which represents a new genus. The faunule represented at four of the localities has intimate relationships with Japanese Cenomanian ammonites that permit close correlations between Japan and the West Coast of America. It is suggested that the other two localities possibly include the Upper Albian. The strata from which the described ammonites were obtained represent only a fraction of the great thickness of the Cretaceous strata in the upper part of the Chitina Valley. General comments on the Cretaceous stratigraphy in the Chitina valley are given in the appendix.show more
