Abstract This paper discusses the semantic properties and the structure of the Hodo-degree construction in Japanese, as illustrated in (1a). (1)a. ok (Ken wa) [P odoroku] hodo [Q ookina butuzoo o mi ta] Ken to...p surprise hodo big Buddha acc look perfect b. ?? (Ken wa) [P kanari odoroku] hodo [Q ookina butuzoo o mi ta] Ken top pretty surprise hodo big Buddha acc look perfect (1a) is interpreted as "Ken saw a Buddha statue which was so large that Ken was surprised." (1b), which contains kanari in P, is much less acceptable than (1a). This paper proposes that the Hodo-degree construction makes use of a presupposition which states that "Q→P & ¬Q→¬P", and argues that the low acceptability of (1b) is caused by the fact that the representation corresponding to "¬P", i.e., kanari odorokanai, is hardly acceptable.show more
