概要 Kazuo Ishiguro was born on November 8, 1954 as the first son of the Ishiguro's. Ishiguro moved to England due to his father's job when he was five years old. For over thirty years, he did not return t...o Japan even once. Ishiguro was naturalized in 1987 as an English citizen. However, when Ishiguro debuted with A Pale View of Hills in 1982, many scholars automatically assumed from his name and appearance that he was a Japanese writer living in England, and emphasized his "Japanese-ness" or treated him as a Japanese novelist. Ishiguro showed discomfort over this phenomenon and kept denying the linkage to Japanese literature; therefore, not many scholars now describe him as a Japanese author. In this paper, I would like to compare Ishiguro's A Pale View of Hills and Yasunari Kawabata's The Sound of the Mountain and clarify that mono no aware does not exist in A Pale View of Hills. Also, I would like to suggest the "image of loss" forms Ishiguro's peculiar mood of sadness.続きを見る
