Abstract |
In her story Engagement (1960), Yumiko Kurahashi portrays a mother who eats her baby. To gain a full understanding of all the imagery concerning motherhood in her literary works, it is essential to un...derstand the meaning of this portrayal, which is unique to this story. This paper aims to compare baby-eating motifs in Greco-Roman mythology and other artistic works with that in Engagement, and to examine Kurahashi's intentions behind the use of the motif.show more
