Abstract In his novel A Beautiful Woman, Rinzo Shiina is said to have depicted three different types of female personalities: social, antisocial, and a third that does not fit either of the two categories. Con...ventional studies report that the third type should be understood as 'unrealistic'. However, applying a category that concerns sociality for the third type as well would seem to be of more use to clarify the intention of the writer and symbolism of the female personality type than a category concerning reality. In this paper, by considering essays Rinzo Shiina wrote while writing the novel and the relations between the novel's characters, I attempt to define the third type as 'asocial', meaning that the woman is lacking in sociality.show more
