Abstract This study reviews clinical psychological studies on the emotional well-being of elderly persons with dementia, inclusive of those that are in nursing and rehabilitative care. Furthermore, this study ...reviewed the prospects of a suitable psychological approach. Existing research has focused mainly on the caregivers, particularly family members, of elderly persons with dementia, instead of focusing exclusively on the patients. However, there has recently been an increase in the number of studies focusing on elderly persons with dementia, with an emphasis on their care. A primary need in this field is the development of an index that can measure the subjective experiences of elderly persons with dementia. Further, some clinical psychology studies draw attention to the effects of elderly persons' mental decline on their behaviors, while other studies reported that elderly persons' emotional functioning are largely unaffected. The reminiscence and psychodrama approaches could stimulate their emotions. The reviewed studies presented a number of methods appropriate for treating each degree of dementia and established the effectiveness of these methods.show more
