Abstract It is well known that a large air space is needed for absorbing sound in low frequencies by using porous material and many types of resonator are needed when applying resonator absorber to absorb soun...d in low frequencies. Therefore, both porous material and resonator absorber are neither realistic nor practical for use of absorbing walls or ceilings in small room such as a living room in a house. On the above aspect, in the previous paper, the authors examined to apply thin resonator absorber for absorbing sound in low frequencies by extending the neck of resonator inside the cavity and combining several types of resonators. However, the structure of such resonators is complicated and the sound absorption characteristics is not uniform. In this paper, as the next study, two or three-series-coupled resonators and setting porous material in resonators are examined to get uniform sound absorption by a numerical simulation based on FDTDM and the experiment of tube method. As a result, it is found that series-coupled resonators and setting porous material in resonators broaden the absorbing frequencies of resonator absorber. This implies that thin absorbing structure with good absorption in a wide range of frequencies could be actualized by applying series-coupled resonators with porous material inside.show more
