Abstract |
This paper researches the word-formation of verbs in Kanbun Kundoku and demonstrates the influence it brought to compound verbs in Japanese. For this purpose, compound verbs of two structures that hav...e a high frequency occurrence in the Early Middle Kanbun Kundoku are mainly studied hereof: means-result structure and parallel structure of synonyms. These two semantic structures are rare in Old Japanese. This paper holds the argument that the cause of their existence is that due to Kanbun Kundoku, the word formation of compound verbs in Japanese was influenced by Chinese. The root cause can be traced to the transformation from ergative verbs to causative verbs and from the redundancy of verb structure to the word-formation morpheme respectively. In this way, this paper gives an explanation to the possibility of grammatical changes under the language contact regarding the word-formation.show more
