Discovery of Sustainability in Sloping Lands as Residential District : Case Study on Nagasaki City's Sloping Urban Area

Abstract Recently in Japan, regional hub cities with many slopes have various urban problems such as depopulation and increase of vacant houses. This paper, taking Nagasaki as a representative of such cities, ...analyzed the actual situation of residents and the physical environment which influences relocation of residence by GIS. Also, a questionnaire survey was conducted in order to analyze the residents' opinion. As the result, the existence of roads for cars influences to the current condition of residences and their relocation. The analysis also revealed that various private and public projects to improve the residential environment have been implemented in Nagasaki, and the residents have certain amount of satisfaction about living on sloping lands in the points of rich landscape and cozy community. All in all, it is implied that sloping lands have sustainability as a residential area.show more
