Abstract Sharing of tacit cultural knowledge is very difficult in intercultural communication. In the field of Japanese language education for foreign students, activity class used in the form of group work ha...s increased in number. However, it is not clear what the process of group work is. A participation and data collection were carried out in the holistic-activity class (By Professor Hideo Hosokawa) in which foreign students acquire their skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking through group work in Waseda University from April to July, 2010. We analyzed data with qualitative analytical skills and demonstrated the process of multi-cultural group work, and also redefined the role of teacher and facilitator. Unlike the mainstream class "To study Japanese language", the holistic activity class "To use Japanese language" serves as a driving force for language and culture acquisition. Tacit cultural knowledge is shared and transferred through interactive communication between foreign and Japanese students.show more
