| Abstract |
It is said that universities have three roles: research, education, and community service. This paper compares Japanese university students' awareness of and attitudes toward community society with th...ose of international students and their families (hereafter, "foreign residents"). The survey was distributed to 230 liberal arts students at Kyushu University in Fukuoka in the first term of 2013 ; a total of 28 people answered. Answers were classified into five groups using the KJ method. Then, we considered differences between the community service activity of these Japanese university students and that of foreign residents, upon which data was previously presented by Matsunaga and Aso (2013). It was revealed that Japanese university students and foreign residents share three points in common. First, they want to engage with the local community and regional society through community events. Second, they want to take action for the community and regional society to the degree possible. Third, they demand public facilities. However, differences between these groups were also found. Namely, foreign residents are interested in cultural exchange with local and regional society, especially in relation to their study of the Japanese language and culture; in contrast, Japanese university students want to associate with communities and regional society by solving problems in the region. On this basis, we suggest that good relations both between Japanese university students and foreign residents and also between local and regional society can be fostered by means of a regular event coordinated by university faculty members in which both Japanese university students and foreign residents participate as volunteers. We suggest regularly holding such an event to foster community spirit and help build a multicultural society.show more
