Abstract A new pickup head is proposed for magnetostrictive torque sensors built on a steel shaft. The torque sensor of multi-head structure can be easily implemented due to its low-profile nature, which impro...ves the performance of the torque sensor. The basic characteristics of the torque sensor using proposed heads are presented. In this type of torque sensor, the steel shaft is another important member of the torque sensor. Nickel chromium molybdenum steel shafts (SNCM) were evaluated for such items as sensitivity, hysteresis and zero-level- fluctuation. Magnetic inhomogeneities of the steel shaft were also evaluated in terms of magnetic anisotropy at the surface of the shaft. It was found that the lowest hysteresis is obtained with a carburized SNCM420 steel shaft. The linearity measured with this shaft was as good as 0.8%/(full scale) (full scale= 1000Nm for a shaft of 25 mm in diameter).show more
