Abstract The purpose of this study was to understand the current consition of the recent media sports studies and to discuss the necessity for the media literacy education. Specifically, in this study, the co...ntents of the media message during sports coverage were analyzed. The analysis revealed that the sports events focus on the "sports community" as a human social community rather than on the essence of the game being covered, and sports documentaries are constructed so that they will cause a sensation as a "narrative". Devaluing the nature of the game, which should be the essence of the sport, means that "sports are regarded as just entertainment", and this has become a problem thatmust not be overlooked. This study identified that it was important for the viewers to understand the message from the "the nature of entertainment" Which are focused on by the media senders. Furthemore, it was suggested that the media literacy is effective for the development of the ability to understand the media message. In the education system of Japan, the medialiteracy is mainly taught in Japanese class, but media literacy is not only effective in Japanese class. Media literacy is a concept which helps people to develop teir "understanding" and their "critical ability to think" about the media on the subject of sports. The futere issues are imolementation of a thorough media literacy education, where media sports are the focus, and continuation of the practical effects, which are obtained through the implementation of the through media literacy education, on activety and the nature of criticism by viewers of the media messages.show more
