Abstract I show that the niyotte phrase expressing an agent can only co occur with the verbs that have an agent argument and assign o to an object, in Japanese passive sentences, and that they are adjuncts bas...ed on the observation of the scope interpretations. Then, I propose that the passive morpheme, rare, that niyotte phrases expressing an agent can only attach to the verb that have an agent argument and assign o to an object, and deletes an agent argument from the argument structure of the verb it attaches to. The attached verb has no agent argument because of the attachment of the rare. Therefore, the niyotte phrase expressing an agent can only co occur with the attached verb.show more
