Abstract |
This paper discusses the structure and the interpretation of amari, based on the framework of Syntactic Semantics proposed in Ueyama (2008a,b,c, 2011, 2013). The main claim of Syntactic Semantics is t...hat the so-called 'understanding' of a sentence is an outcome established on the meaning of the sentence supplemented by the world knowledge. The meaning of a sentence is further based on the lexical meaning of each word and modified or complemented by the information conveyed by the syntactic structure. This paper proposes that there are lexically two types of amari, one of which is of type o, and the other of which is of type p. The amari of type o refers to an event in which the degree of something has exceeded the criterion supposed by the speaker, and it is considered as a cause of the following action. In contrast, amari of type p adds information to some object that the degree of something exceeds the criterion supposed by the speaker. This paper shows that the similarities and the differences of various constructions which contain amari can be accounted for by assuming these two types of amari.show more
