Abstract This paper presents some stylized facts about the transformation of the Japanese corporate system since the 1990s and discusses the resulting emergence of new hybrid organizational forms. To begin, we... outline two major findings. One is that changes have not proceeded uniformly but unevenly across different groups of firms; consequently, the Japanese corporate system now shows a far greater heterogeneity than it ever has. The other finding is of the emergence of a hybrid firm called the "new J-type firm," which combines shareholder-oriented management styles and long-term employment practices. We then discuss whether this new J-type firm can be sustained over the long term from both theoretical and conceptual perspectives.show more
