Abstract Distribution of the oxygen isotope ratio δ^18 O was derived for the 115 ゚E section across the continental slope of the Antarctica. Distinctly depleted δ^18 O was found on the shelf, revealing the dilu...ting effect of glacial melt water. Salt budget and δ^18 O tendency in the seasonal mixed layer indicated that the near surface freshening was consistent with that due to the sea ice melt and the freshwater budget gave realistic thickness of the melted sea ice in this region, δ^18 O of the Adelie Land Bottom Water (ADLBW) was derived as -0.22‰, which was similar to that found for the bottom water in the Princess Elizabeth Trough (PETBW). This fact supports the idea of the dominant eastern source of the PETBW. The oxygen isotope data are important as a reference baseline for future oceanographic and climate variability, and hence sustained observations are crucial.show more
