Abstract Recently, the activity with different types of communities such as the university and region is active, as exemplified by the community development, the venture business, and the development of the in...novative education programs. In this paper, based on the concepts concerning "communities of practice", literature on "the developmental work research", "change laboratory", and "formative field work" were reviewed to investigate the way how the field for activity is generated by two different communities, i.e., the university and regional communities which have different living world. These studies were analyzed by focusing on the way how others intervene in the practice intentionally and on the developmental transformations in the field for activity. Through the review, the following questions were raised: "For whom are these activities created?", "Are the practice and activity experiments?", and "How long should the researchers and practitioner be involved in the activity?" Further research questions based on these questions were presented with the notion of "ways of participation."show more
