In the present study, the calming responses of infants to swinging and sound stimuli were evaluated using behavioral scores (based on crying and facial expression), heart rate, and indices of autonomic nervous system activity. The swinging stimuli consisted of maternal holding-and-rocking and an electric swinging apparatus. The sound stimuli included brown noise and a “no sound” condition. Brown noise was presented to the infants at a sound pressure level of 70 dB (A-weighted). Six infants, aged three to four months, were exposed to both swinging and sound stimuli, either indi- vidually or simultaneously. The primary findings suggested that the electric swinging stimulus had a calming effect on the infants. The maternal holding-and-rocking stimulus also showed a calming effect, although it was less clear than that of the electric swinging stimulus. Brown noise also showed a calming effect on the infants. Behavioral scores and heart rate suggested that swinging and sound stimuli independently contributed to infant calming. In addition, comparison with previously reported results for infants aged seven to eight months showed that the stimulus conditions under which calming effects were observed differed between infants aged three to four months and those aged seven to eight months.
