| 概要 | This paper examines the multilayering of Myanmar migrants’ residence status structure in South Korea follow- ing the 2021 political crisis in Myanmar. Drawing on Bourdieu’s concept of capital convers...ion, it analyzes how migrants strategically convert social and cultural capital into institutionalized residence statuses. Using statistical data (2019–2024) and fieldwork in Bupyeong and Gimhae, the study identifies a shift from a single-layered structure dominated by low-skilled male E‑9 workers to a multilayered configuration characterized by diversified residence statuses, increased female participation, and emerging regional concentrations. The political crisis fundamentally altered migrants’ orientation from remittance-focused temporary labor to long-term settlement. Restricted return options prompted the Korean government to extend humanitarian stay (G‑1), while workers pursued upward mobility to skilled worker status (E‑7‑4) through Korean language acquisition— a process conceptualized as strategic investment in symbolic capital. At the same time, female students (D‑2/D‑4) emerged as a significant new inflow, reshaping community dynamics. Comparative analysis shows that although the two hubs have distinct formation bases—Bupyeong rooted in 1990s political refugees and Gimhae in 2000s multinational labor—both exhibit convergent patterns of multilayering through capital conversion processes. This convergence demonstrates how Myanmar migrants actively reconstitute their capital portfolios to navigate institutional constraints, transforming from temporary laborers into strategic set- tlement actors. This process suggests that residence status functions as a central object of capital conversion, high- lighting a dynamic that is insufficiently addressed in current theoretical accounts.続きを見る |
