| 概要 |
This paper explores the semantic ambiguity caused by coordinate structures, a significant issue when interpreting between Japanese and English. The linguistic literature has established that coordinat...e structures involving the conjunction and can convey subordinate meanings such as conditional, temporal, concessive, or causal interpretations. These structures are often referred to in theoretical linguistics as left-subordinating and-constructions, and their use is widespread among native English speakers. Therefore, it is essential for interpreters and translators to distin-guish between two key configurations: one that merely adds information and one that imparts a subordinate meaning. To facilitate this, I proposed a diagnostic method based on syntactic and semantic analysis and conducted a translation test incorporat-ing both standard and left-subordinating structures. Additionally, this paper extends the analysis to English and Nepali interpretations to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed diagnostics for standard and left-subordinating and-clauses. Various analy-ses, including t-tests and effect size measurements, were conducted on the test results for English-Japanese and English-Nepali interpreting, demonstrating the effectiveness of the interpreting education method using the proposed diagnostic approach for the two types of and-constructions.続きを見る
