We examined the effect of comma- and period-pause duration in Japanese speech on listeners’ impressions. In Experiment 1, we manipulated the pause duration at commas and periods together, and in Experiment 2, we manipulated them independently. Participants listened to each stimulus and evaluated items such as “natural” and “fast” in 10 steps. Factor analysis of the evaluation data revealed two factors: speech rate and naturalness. The speech rate factor score decreased as the pause durations for commas and periods increased. Additionally, the naturalness factor score was highest for stimuli with a comma pause duration of 0.3 seconds and a period pause duration of 1.2 seconds. Compared to previous studies on those of Chinese and English, the results showed that Japanese native speakers perceived shorter comma pause durations as more natural.続きを見る
