概要 The theory of cleavage fracture of ferrite suggested by Stroh is further developed taking into account the realistic characteristics of plastic deformations. An idea is suggested that the process of c...leavage in ferrite may consist of the three stages, which are discriminated by their dimensions and characteristics in mechanisms, that is, the stage of the initiation of crack, and the earlier and the later stages of the propagation of crack. A micro-crack whose dimension is comparable to that of Frank-Read source will initialy be formed in the plastically deformed region at the edge of slip band or twinned layer. Then, the crack will be grown to cleavage when the external stress exceed a critical value, which depends on the amount of plastic deformations at the tip of crack and the state of the system of mean stresses. A model mechanism is suggested for the former stage of the propagation of crack, thereby the work required to extend the crack is estimated to be the order of 10^4 C. G. S., and the critical size of the crack the order of a grain size. The critical stresses and transition temperatures calcuated based on this model are shown to agree with the available experimental evidences at least qualitatively, and in order of magnitude. Comparing with slip, twinning is suggested to be the more favourable cause of cleavage at temperatures sufficiently lower than the transition temperature. The theory, however, leaves unsolved problems for the latter stage of the propagation of crack where larger plastic deformations caused by twinning may play an important part.続きを見る
