概要 Thoreau’s “Natural History of Massachusetts” was published on the July issue of The Dial in 1842. The essay, Thoreau’s first published work, was intended as a review of Reports—on the Fishes, Reptiles..., and birds; the herbaceous Plants and Quadrupeds; the Insects Injurious to Vegetation; and the Invertebrate Animals of Massachusetts, published by the Commissioners on the Zoologial and Botanical Survey of the State. Despite its original purpose, however, the essay, culled mostly from Thoreau’s journal entries in 1837 through 1841, develops into a uniquely original rendition of natural history, aided by the poet’s views and insights on the status of science and transcendental philosophy. The present study considers some major factors constituting the characteristic features of Thoreau’s nature writing and also investigates his associated network of friends and scientists around Boston who shared a strong interest in the emergent discipline of natural history.
This study is particularly focused on Thoreau’s criticism, more precisely, his skeptical sense of ambivalence toward the way that scientific facts are formulated and documented. Apparently disappointed in the mere listing of biological facts in the Reports and dismissing the best part of them as results of “more labor than enthusiasm” and “not interesting to the general reader,” Thoreau more fundamentally questions the validity of scientific vocabulary and method, typically represented by Linnaean system of classification, as a truthful and vividly living rendition of nature. While sufficiently aware of the importance of exploring natural facts (“Let us not underrate the value of a fact; it will one day flower in a truth”), Thoreau underscores the need to incorporate details of cultural history and myth and thus brings in his description a vision of the moment when a scientific fact does “flower” in a poetic truth.
