| 概要 | The idea of establishing a phonetic alphabet applicable to all languages was first suggested by Φtto Jespersen in his letter to Paul Passy in 1886. After enthusiastic discussions and consultations amo...ng the members extending over two years, the first version of the International Phonetic Alphabet was drawn up. This is an essay in which the present writer has tried to trace back a brief history of phonetic signs prior to and around the establishment of the IPA. The earlier phonetic letters and notations to be considered here are as follows: Bell's visible speech letters, Sweet's revised organic notation, Jespersen1s analphabetic notation, Ellis's paleotypic letters and glossic characters, and Sweet's Romie notation.続きを見る |
