Aelfric's prose cannot be regarded as merely a rhythmic prose of persuasion; there are significant stylistic differences in each of his religious prose. We can, for instance, observe some stylistic pe...culiarities of chronicles'simplicity, though in part, even in Lives of Saints, which is written in a highly rhythmical form of prose. Further, it has occasionally something in common with Colloquy and Grammar written for the mere purpose of utility. Thus, it becomes possible to propose that Aelfric's highly rhythmical and alliterative devices were used to highten the effect of persuasion. He intended to move his audience, but not at the expense of understanding. It may, therefore, be reasonably stated that the prose of utility underlies the elevated rhythmical style of Aelfric's prose.続きを見る
