| 概要 | The aim of this survey is to provide material for a research into the history of the English studies in Japan. The writer’s concern is how the English grammatical categories were understood and transl...ated by early Japanese grammarians in the Meiji era, when the categories were introduced into this country. In order to give a historical description of the subject, ten English grammar books including school grammars by Pinneo, Quackenbos, Brown, and Swinton, are selected as key materials, with some others when references are necessary; most of which were the translations prevalently used during the period. There are sections on parts of speech, gender, number, person, case, comparison, voice, tense, mood, participle, gerund, and complement. In each section, the writer has treated the materials so as to clarify or criticize the way of Japanese grammarians’ understanding and translation of the categories of English grammar. It is hoped that this paper may offer a suggestion as to how important the properly translated nomenclature is, especially in case of being expressed in ideographs, such as Chinese characters, though it is often said that names are mere marks of entities.続きを見る |
