概要 |
Despite its critical influence on human societies, the mechanism of aggressive behavior toward out-group members (out-group aggression) remains unclear. Based on terror management theory, it is predic...ted that threats to cultural worldviews arouse existential anxiety and induce people to exhibit out-group aggression to defend their worldviews. We conducted an experiment on 53 Japanese university students to confirm this prediction. The result showed that threats to worldview neither arouse existential anxiety nor cause out-group aggression. Thus, the predictions of terror management theory were not supported. Some recent studies have cast doubt on the validity of terror management theory. Although we cannot conclude that terror management theory is invalid among the Japanese because of the sample size and procedural difference, the theory may have some form of limitation on its predictability. Insights for future research were discussed.続きを見る
