概要 Onomatopoetic words expressing manners of action, psychological conditions(=gitaigo) are normally created from the mental image of the action, state, and condition, not normally imitated from the orig...inal sound of that animate or inanimate object. The purpose of this paper is to exhibit the relations of sound and meaning in gitaigo. There are two types of gitaigo. One is developed from giongo. For example, kasa-kasa, originally a giongo word, expresses a sound of dry leaves, and its extended meaning becomes the dry state of something. By clarifying some patterns of the metaphor from giongo to gitaigo, the relations of sound and meaning of gitaigo is exhibited. The other type of gitaigo is not originated from giongo, and in many cases it has several distinct meanings. For instance, bura-bura expresses both 'swinging rather fast' and 'idling' of something a little heavy or something firm. In the latter type of gitaigo, the phonological shape of a gitaigo word determines its meaning. The common meaning in the same honological shape is called a schema and the schema is the prototype of each gitaigo word. By implementing the notion of schema and prototype in cognitive linguistics, the sound symbolic system of a gitaigo word is able to be revealed systematically.続きを見る
