This research survey, conducted by questionnaire in 1996, was designed to investigate the horticulture informations conveyed through TV and radio in Japan. One hundred and seventeen of the 127 TV stations and 87 of the 90 radio stations responded to our questionnaire. Regular programs on horticulture (HT) (i.e., gardening) were broadcast by 24 TV stations and 13 radio stations, and the total number of programs per week were 26 on TV and 28 on radio, respectively. From 1982, the number of TV stations which introduced regular HT programs increased into the late 1980's, and radio stations into the early 1990's. The survey showed that most of the TV or radio stations with regular HT programs broadcasted one program of 10-20 min per week. Fifteen min programs were the most popular on TV, and 5m in ones on radio Most of the HT programs were found to be scheduled Saturday or Sunday morning on TV, while on radio they were delivered in the mornings of weekdays and Saturday Fifty min of TV HT programs and 10 min of radio program by Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK) were delivered all over Japan. Regular HT programs by private companies differed among prefectures in total durations of broadcasts, the greatest being 45 min per week in Mie Pref. on TV, and 47 min per week in Iwate Pref. on radio. The key words of HT programs were found to be "gardening", "horticulture", "flower" and “soil" on TV, and on radio "gardening", "horticulture", "farming", and "green". Most of the TV HT programs were brodcast all over Japan through the network stations, so that the same contents were delivered in different areas, whereas the HT radio programs were localized, the contents therefore being different in different areas.
