概要 | In spite of persistent oppositions, Buddhism, which reached Japan from PAIKCHE, was accepted by the Soga family. The event that the Mononobe family, which was one of the strongest powers against Buddh...ism, was destroyed by the Soga family, not only caused a rapid growth of the influence of the latter, but also ensured the prosperity of Buddhism in Japan. The heads of other families who supported the Soga family embraced Buddhism without hesitation, and the Soga family took the initiative in making Buddhism prosperous. The temple of Hokoji built by the family at Asuka displayed the greatness of their power both in politics and Buddhism. Succesive emperors, especially from a polical consideration, had assumed an attitude of onlookers toward Buddhism for about one century since the introduction of Buddhiam into Japan, and as such when the Mononobe family decayed and the general trend turned in favour of Budhism, the royal family found themselves to be behind the march of acceptance of Buddhism and helplessly isolated from the growing tendency. The Empress Suiko intended to take the initiative in Buddhism away from the Soga family and for that purpose appointed the officials for control of Buddhist Samgha, and thereby she tried to exercise her influence over it. Her attempt was, however, not successfull, because she had no royal temple of her own. For the first time as an emperor, Jyomei erected a royal temple named "Kudara-daiji", of which mission was to control the Samgha. The mission was, however, not successfully carried out. After the fall of the Soga famiy, it was taken over to and strongly carried out by Daikan-daiji temple built by the Emperor Tenmu. The temple was nothing but a office for control of the Samgha. Thus monks and nuns, being restricted by the Soni-ryo (lit. edict for monks and nuns) which was a basic law governing the Samgha, were deprived of freedom in their religious activities and became subjected to the power of the state through the officials for control of the Samgha then called "Sogo".続きを見る |
