| 概要 | During his 40 years in China, Feuchtwang (anthropology, London School of Economics) has been investigating local temple religions that are not connected to any of the main Chinese religious and philos...phical traditions such as Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, or communism. He finds that their practices and references to texts challenge the adequacy of Western anthropological concepts of ritual and religion. His perspectives include religion and its historical transfer into China, a theory of religious ritual as deference and communicative excess, the organization of extravagance as charismatic authority and self-government, charismatic self-healing as a case of spirit-writing in Taiwan under Japanese occupation, the avenging ghost, the location of ghosts and demons between death and life, and religion in the government of the People's Republic of China.
