| 概要 | Schuler has turned her dissertation into a tour de force, a study of variations on the Tamil story of Nili/Icakkiyamman, an edition and translation of a newly discovered version, an analysis of the me...ning behind the myths and a CD/DVD production of contemporary renditions of the story and the annual festival in honor of the goddess. The story of a woman and her brother murdered by her lover and the revenge she takes in her next incarnation. The transmission of the story over generations resulted in many changes but the death of Nili/Icakkiyamman, her revenge and the death by suicide of a village that was tricked into an oath are in all of the versions. Schuler investigates the meaning behind this violent tale and the change of a vengeful demon/goddess into a protector of pregnant women. She particularly examines the relationship of the goddess and her brother. Schuler's thorough work is a model of ethnographic/literary studies.
