The origins of this religious movement in the teachings of the Sufi mystic Sheikh Amadou Bamba (d.1927), the development of a religious art around him and his teachings, and an in-depth analysis of the art and architecture associated with him and his followers are the central themes of the book, which is heavily illustrated with color plates.
