概要	The first volume in a new series titled "New Perspectives on Modern Jewish History" does indeed offer new perspectives on the complexities of the Jewish experience in Shanghai. Eber (b.1930; emeritus,...East Asian studies, Hebrew U. of Jerusalem, Israel) sets the stage by describing Shanghai before the Sino-Japanese war of 1937, and the communities of Sephardi and Ashkenazi Jews and of Russian and Japanese residents. Following are chapters on arrivals from Germany in the early 1930s, the refugee flood and responses in Shanghai, life and Jewish culture, the war years, and the end of the war.
