概要 | Smith (political theory, Lancaster U.) explores the linkages between friendship and the political, as well as the opportunities to rethink their interconnection for modern political needs. Mainly it i... a study of major philosophical encounters with the idea and practices of friendship. He starts with Plato's monistic account of friendship and Aristotle's pluralistic one, the latter of which Smith feels opens Western thought to incomplete but nonetheless valuable forms of politics. Then he presents three mini-surveys of friendship in the writing and life of three modern thinkers: Soren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche and Carl Schmitt. While Kierkegaard emphasizes the inferiority of human reciprocity to the love cultivated between friends who relate to one another through God, Nietzsche shifts from supporting a self-sharing friendship to self-overcoming loneliness, and Carl Schmitt subordinates the ideals of friendship to the priority of maintaining an authoritarian nation-state that excludes enemies. In the end, Smith offers his own friendships and explores politics through identity, holding and possibility, and underscores not just plural values, but plural ways of bonding.
