In this model, based on clearly stated axioms, the processes being modeled are expressed as systems of partial differential equations. The systematic procedure described here can be used to construct mathematical models of any macroscopic, physical, chemical, or biological system. The first three chapters introduce the axiomatic approach. In the book's remaining chapters, models are developed for understanding phenomena such as solute transport by a free fluid, flow of a fluid in a porous medium, enhanced oil recovery, linear elasticity, and fluid mechanics. The text includes chapter exercises and 25 pages of mathematical appendices. Herrera teaches at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. Pinder teaches at the University of Vermont.
