概要 Mailaparambil (history, Bielefeld U., Germany) explores the role of maritime trade in shaping the politics of the early-modern Malabar Coast through a focus on the Arackal Ali Rajas of Cannanore, prom...nent Mappila Muslim maritime merchants in pre-colonial Kerala, South India. He adopts a regional perspective on the political status and social identity of Cannanore's Mappila Muslim trading community that aims to avoid what he sees as the essentializing approaches which stress the "great traditions" of Brahmanism and Islam exclusively. The work is organized into three sections: analysis of the formation of socio-political structures in relation to the geographical setting and the emergence of the trading operations of the Arackal Ali Rajas within that context; examination of the political history of the Arackal Ali Rajas in relation to the rival Dutch East India Company; and consideration of the interrelationships between regional conditions and extra-regional trade on the political fortunes of the various regional actors.
